My family has a fountain

Out where the grasses grow.

I like to watch its visitors

And see them come and go.

I’ve seen teeny tiny birds–

Sparrows that flutter by,

Stop to drink or bathe or preen,

Then flit back towards the sky.

I’ve seen arrogant blue jays

Who come to splash and play,

And proudly run and chase and fight

Any birds that come their way.

I’ve seen great furry cats

Who come for a little drink,

While balancing, so awkwardly,

At the fountain’s brink.

The fountain’s like a theater,

And the animals, the show,

I hope they know what joy it brings

To watch them come and go.
