It must be hard to be grass

Don’t you agree?

To grow wild in a field, then be bit to the roots by a cow or or a goat

Digested, brought back, chewed as a cud

Then digested again and re-exposed to the air during the inevitable end of every meal.

Maybe instead growing in a prairie and be consumed by animals

or by sweeping waves of fire.

Would you prefer adorning a stately lawn?

For a while, to grow unharmed and uneaten

then to be cut down again and again

and be expected to grow back just as strong

and green

and vibrant as ever before.
